FREDERICK J. JOHNSON: Shared parenting is the truest type of joint custody. The theory behind shared parenting is that both the mother and the father have equal rights to the child and should have equal time with the child.
JEFFREY J. OTIS: Shared parenting is essentially classified as an arrangement between the two parents where the parenting time is relatively equal.
FREDERICK J. JOHNSON: Well, a common misconception is that if you have a true shared parenting plan, you never have to pay child support. That's not always true. There's still a calculation. Usually, it's a much lesser amount than if you didn't have shared parenting.
JEFFREY J. OTIS: Well, shared parenting can be achieved either by agreement. Or it can be dictated to you by the court. Each party presents the schedule that they would like to see in place to the court. The court will evaluate each side's wishes. It will compare those wishes to the best interests of the child. And then it will render its decision.
